-Cedarbrooke Chateau

This was my first volunteer work that I did for 4 years while in high school. Cedarbrooke Chateau was a retirement home that was near my house in Mission, BC. I would go there every Saturday and taught a variety of classes and activities such as computer basics, bocce ball, Wii Bowling, and skit theater. I had developed a real connection working with all the residents there, and I loved teaching them and helping them learn and keep active. I think this also helped with my decision to become a teacher, because I had developed such a love for teaching and leading these activities with the residents.

-Trinity Christian Church

I did most of my volunteer work with Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Abbotsford, BC. While there I worked closely with their Church School sunday program in which I aided in planning and teaching in classrooms every sunday teaching lessons from the Bible and corresponding activities. In addition to this I also helped run a church ministry series in which I would write and perform a short lesson in front of the congregation; my most popular being Professor Phil Aithful, a scientist who did mad science experiments and tied them to a biblical teaching.

-VBS

I worked with multiple VBS program, Vacation Bible School, which was a week long day camp program where students learnt about bible stories based around a specific theme such as shipwreck, roman times, or wacky inventions. There the students would create crafts, learn stories, sing songs, and do activities and games. I worked with multiple churches helping set up and design the props and set pieces which would then be lent out around the Fraser Valley for each churches week. I also helped lead groups, lead activities, perform in the skits, and help out in any other capacity where I was needed.

-Improv Club

In my undergraduate at University of the Fraser Valley, I lead a weekly drop in improv club where fellow students and I would play games, learn about improv, do sketches and generally have a good time. The Improv Club was started by a dear friend of mine in their first year of undergrad, but I took the lead on the group after his unfortunate passing. While the group wasn’t very successful after his passing, I did my best to honor his memory, and many of the games and activities that I took up I think could be utilized in a future classroom setting and keeping his legacy going.

-Big Brothers

I worked with the Abbotsford branch of the Big Brothers Big Sisters for over a year. With them I helped mentor students, and did a one on one mentoring session every Monday at a local school. There we would spend an hour or so playing games, doing science experiments, reading books, and once we even learned how to do card tricks. This was supposed to help the students with social anxiety to make connections and create strengthened social interactions. It also helped me to learn how to interact with students, get familiar with school schedules, and generally make connections.
